Book Reading In the past day or so I've finished reading three books I've been working on.
1. The Elegance of the Hedgehog http://www.amazon.com/Elegance-Hedgehog-Muriel-Barbery/dp/1933372605 I don't particularly recommend it. Much of it was internal class warfare where the "smart" ones use LOTS of big words and try to prove (in their own minds or journals) that they are, indeed, smarter than the others around them. (Some of the word issues may have come from a bad translation from the french, but I don't know.) And the ending was lame.
2. The Tales of Beedle the Bard http://www.amazon.com/Tales-Beedle-Bard-Standard/dp/0545128285/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1246222714&sr=1-1
Quick. Easy. I like new and different fairy tales in general. A bit meta as it is "translated" by hermione granger and has notes by albus dumbledore and a few extra notes from j.k. rowling.
3. Predictably Irrational http://www.amazon.com/Predictably-Irrational-Hidden-Forces-Decisions/dp/006135323X/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1246222831&sr=1-2
Non-Fiction. A fascinating look at behavioral economics and choices that people make. I recommend this one.

Emergency Kits So back in March my car was broken into and among the things taken were our Earthquake Preparedness Kit and my car emergency kit (jumpers, flashlight, etc).
We need to replace these things and get more emergency stuff for the apartment.
There are a billion places to look -- anyone have a specific site/store/etc that has fairly complete kits to recommend?

I Am Willing I Am Willing Words and Music by Holly Near © Hereford Music (ASCAP)
I am open and I am willing To be hopeless would seem so strange It dishonors those who go before us So lift me up to the light of change
There is hurting in my family There is sorrow in my town There is panic in the nation There is wailing the whole world round
I am open and I am willing To be hopeless would seem so strange It dishonors those who go before us So lift me up to the light of change
May the children see more clearly May the elders be more wise May the winds of change caress us Even though it burns our eyes
I am open and I am willing To be hopeless would seem so strange It dishonors those who go before us So lift me up to the light of change
Give me a mighty oak to hold my confusion Give me a desert to hold my fears Give me a sunset to hold my wonder Give me an ocean to hold my tearsI Am Willing
I am open and I am willing To be hopeless would seem so strange It dishonors those who go before us So lift me up to the light of change

smiles things that made me smile this morning.
1. I know ian loves me.
2. The cats were cuddly and sleeping on me all cute like.
3. While driving to work today I ended up behind a flower delivery van. A silly yellow smiley balloon was at the exact height of the window and bobbed along smiling at me for a few miles.
4. When I got to work one of the quail flew by me into a specific bush. I think I know where their nest is... I can start quail baby watch now...

not about me
a diamond is forever
eyes blurry with love she says “yes”
yes to marriage and love and the whole shebang
eyes blurry she accepts the ring he places on her finger
and all the love he has to give
she quickly forgets the lie he told
to test her love and strength
she lets love overrule the fact that he lied to her face
hours before asking for commitment and happy ever after
he said -- they didn’t like her
he said -- dinner was awkward because his family didn’t approve
and watched as she sat, with pain and discomfort in her heart
he just watched as his lie ate away at her
while she made small talk with them all
and when he gave her the ring
(a diamond is forever)
he came clean
“i had to test how you handle bad situations”
she passed
and now she wears his ring
she tells of his kindness and goodness
she speaks of his love and honesty
(he’s not the type of person to lie)
how quickly she forgives and forgets

of life and death a few weeks ago i was in the er hooked up to ivs for a migraine and ridiculous amounts of vomiting. as ian and i sat in the little curtained area for hours as i begged for something to stop the horrid restlessness that came from the medication. my nurse lacked in the bedside manner, but the doctor was good and attentive.
we overheard a man come in with vague complaints that had been going on for a few days. he was talking to the doctor, they hadn’t even hooked him up to the usual stuff yet and his heart went wonky. i don’t know the proper terminology. but we overheard (ian may have been able to see it from his angle) the doctor calmly call for help (“hey guys i need you over here now.”) when the guy went bad. and we heard the subsequent dialogue for the Three times they had to shock him. the doctor was always calm and to the point when he spoke and when he dealt with the situation that occurred.
he was alive when we left. but there is something strange and disturbing to witness someone almost dying several times.

pop music earworm http://www.npr.org/blogs/monitormix/2009/03/pop_goes_the_world_1.html
stuck. in. head! personally i prefer the version where the guy is singing (and it's not just because i was in high school journalism class with him) -- i am just partial to a little bit of gender-fuck in my music (it is not clearly stated or anything, but this was written for a girl to sing and it is a song typical of female singers, not male).
it's very POP. not my type, but it does it's job...

*crafty* jewelry beading help way back in ny i used to know where to find good clasps and beads and the such for earrings and bracelets and necklaces, etc.
i bought some beads and a few barrel clasps for necklaces and bracelets yesterday and made my first bracelet today (well, after a very long hiatus)... the clasp is HORRIBLE! tugging on it and the hook bends out of position ready to lose the rest of the bracelet.
do any of you know where i can get (online or in the sf bay area) good strong barrel (or similar) clasps?
Thank you!

25 random Things Meme. Seen everywhere... 25 Random Things about Me.
1. I *refused* and despised the notion of becoming a Special Education Teacher for years and years. Now I can’t imagine *not.*
2. I was born on Holy Saturday (I think that’s why I like bunnies so much); a month premature.
3. I didn’t go to kindergarten.
4. I will walk between two adolescent boys fighting to separate them, but not girls.
5. Ian and I met at Burning Man, at night, after days of not showering, etc. When we met about a month later for our first dinner date we didn’t recognize each other. For at least 5 minutes (possibly closer to 10) he sat and I stood five feet from him in front of the bookstore before I thought that HAS to be him and spoke up. I thought this was going to be a doomed date. Clearly not the case. :D
6. I still prefer to sleep with a “soft side” (the satin edge on a blanket) like I did when I was a child.
7. I used to line up my dolls and play train engineer/conductor when I was little.
8. I Hated! teaching Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone even though I think the book is great.
9. Sometimes I can be quite condescending and I don’t like that part of me.
10. I generally feel intellectually inferior, but not at work.
11. I am a klutz and I bruise easily. This is not a good combination.
12. I have 8 holes in my left ear, 3 in my right, one in my tongue, and 1 in my nostril.
13. I was once introduced, personally, to Archbishop Desmond Tutu. He said I was lovely (or something along those lines).
14. I can’t stand when a tag is sticking out of the back of a shirt. I have to physically stop myself from touching strangers to fix it.
15. When I moved to California I drove with only my cat, Maxling, as my co-pilot.
16. I have loads of patience with my students. Very little for adults who are being stupid when they are in positions that would suggest they have some brain power...
17. I used to search through the dictionary just to find new words to learn.
18. Avocados are yucky and they contaminate everything they touch.
19. SJSU’s special education program has put me through so many ridiculous and pointless hoops. It would be a miracle if I continue for my level II credential or Master’s there. I am just starting to consider what other schools are around for this program, and if they are any better.
20. It is exceedingly rare that there is too much salt or garlic in a meal (where salt and garlic are appropriate, not ice cream or lemon pie....).
21. I have, literally, gotten lost when Point A and Point B were on the same road. Then there was the time I was headed to northern Vermont and ended up in Boston...
22. I was a horrible waitress because I’m just a little too flaky to make it work.
23. I have had my imaginary daughter’s name picked out since middle school or early high school. Good thing Ian has agreed to the name. We haven’t decided on a boy name yet; which is ok, as I’m not pregnant yet... We’ve got time.
24. One of my favorite things to see is the dark of the moon. You know, when there is a thin crescent, but you can still see the rest of the light on the rest of the circle’s edge. I find it beautiful. I want something like that as a tattoo where my neck meets my back.
25. I honestly didn’t think that I would be in a relationship as healthy, goofy, wonderful, fair, honest, good, and loving as the one I am in with Ian. I never quite bought the “You just know when you find the right person,” line, but here I am. It’s true.

President Obama I have not been one of the uber-fangirls for Obama. I've liked him from the start, but a golden tongue isn't the only thing that does it for me.
Hope builds more slowly -- there is a lot of work to be done and I guarantee that I won't agree with every decision and choice this man and his team makes. But today a great evil is out of power and a great hope has taken the position.
May it go well!
P.S. And really Obama is an *amazing* orator. His words, his cadence... It's mesmerizing. There were several quotes I wanted to take out because they said all that was needed to say. Yet he replaced those words with more of the same -- that were all that needed to be said. He speaks in a genuine tone; may this be more than lip service to a nation starving for leadership.

I must admit that the ipod touch and all it's niftiness (internets, games like diner dash, music, video, etc) is even cooler than I thought it would be! Thank you boy that spoils me! hL Posted via LiveJournal.app.
